Our Thailand team surpassed their goal by more than double, diverting over 45 tons of waste from landfills.

In addition to continually looking at ways to reduce our physical waste, from 2020-2021 we reduced our manufacturing energy intensity by more than 43%.

The power of saving

We are always exploring and innovating new ways to reduce power consumption. That’s why, when we focused on improving HDD power efficiency, it resulted in an estimated 300,000 MWh of product-level power savings from 2020-2021.

We’ve set an ambitious aim — approved by the Science Based Targets initiative — to reduce our carbon footprint. Our Scope 1 and 2 target is to reduce emissions by 42% from 2020 to 2030. Our Scope 3 target is to reduce the use-phase emissions intensity of our products by 50% by 2030.

We hold ourselves accountable for our impacts by disclosing annual GHG and water inventories, which are externally verified.

That’s how many trees we’ve saved.

Packaging that saves

We’re dedicated to saving greenspaces, one tree at a time. By reevaluating and redesigning our packaging, we’ve saved 12,000 trees.

Additionally, most paperboard, plastic, and packaging used is recyclable where facilities exist.

Saving by recycling

On Earth Day 2020, we launched our Easy Recycle product take-back program in the US that enables customers to easily recycle old data storage devices from any manufacturer. This free program has recycled more than 19,000 devices and diverted over 8.6 metric tons of waste from landfills.

Over the last 5 years, Western Digital has supported environmental causes around the globe. Over 4,400 employees have engaged in more than 100 volunteer events, including cleaning up beaches along the coast of California, helping release baby sea turtles on the beaches of Malaysia, beautifying urban spaces near our offices in India, and even adopting and tracking personal sustainable habits as the world went virtual in 2020. Additionally, we’re proud to share that we’ve given over $1.1M to environmentally focused non-profits through grants, matching campaigns, and other support.

Product Compliance

Western Digital is striving to eliminate the use of heavy metals and toxic substances. Our products comply with the applicable worldwide environmental regulations and requirements below.

RoHS
The European Union (EU) Directive on the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS, 2002/95/EU) was released in 2006. This environmental directive is designed to restrict the use of some heavy metals and halogenated flame retardants (PBBs and PBDEs) in electronic products. All Western Digital products sold in the EU after July 1, 2006 comply with the EU RoHS requirements.

The EU RoHS2 Recast Directive (2011/65/EU) was released in 2011. All of Western Digital’s products comply with the RoHS2 directive along with subsequent amendments.

EU REACH
The European Union’s Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulates the handling of sensitive chemicals and the phase-in of alternatives for the most dangerous chemicals used within EU commerce. The European Chemicals Agency, (the EU agency responsible for implementing REACH), publishes the names of substances that are candidates for its Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) list. As provided for by REACH, Western Digital reviews its products to determine if any Western Digital products contain more than 0.1% by weight per article of any substance on the SVHC candidate list.

SCIP Database
As part of the European Union (EU) Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC (WFD), the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has built a database for storing safe-use information for substances of very high concern (SVHCs) present in articles placed on the market in the EU. It is referred to as the Substances of Concern In articles, as such or in complex objects (Products) (SCIP) database.

The EU WFD and SCIP database add to existing reporting requirements managed under the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation. From 5 January 2021, suppliers of articles containing a SVHC on the Candidate List in a concentration above 0.1% weight by weight on the EU market need to submit that information via the new database to ECHA under the Waste Framework Directive.

We have undertaken a review of all our product components in order to assess the extent to which they contain the relevant concentration of SVHCs. Our EU established subsidiaries have submitted SCIP reports for affected products, which they sell in the EU market so that we are fully compliant with our reporting obligation. In order to equip our EU customers with the required information to submit SCIP reports, or provide information to our customer’s own EU customers to do the same, the relevant SVHC information for our products is available upon request.

SCIP Database Position Letter

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive was created by the EU and is designed to minimize the disposal of electrical and electronic equipment into landfills. The WEEE Directive requires that a specific marking be included on certain end-user products to identify them as items covered by this legislation. Western Digital encourages users of its products to not disassemble products into components, and to dispose of products in accordance with local laws. Western Digital products include the WEEE symbol in support of this directive.

Western Digital considers product safety a top priority. Our products are designed and manufactured to comply with relevant directives, harmonized standards, laws and regulations. We are active in industry working groups and committees that are dedicated to developing new solutions and guidelines that will benefit retailers and consumers. In addition, we have invested resources and built robust programs to ensure products offered for sale are safe and compliant.

Product Environmental Compliance Spec

Western Digital must ensure environmental compliance for all materials, parts, products and Product Protective Packaging and materials used during manufacturing of its products. This document describes Western Digital’s specifications for prohibiting, restricting, and reporting certain chemical compounds, materials, or substances in Western Digital’s products or manufacturing processes. This document describes Western Digital supplier’s requirements for compliance to Western Digital’s Product Environmental Compliance Engineering Specification.

All suppliers are required to provide all the following documents for every part supplied to Western Digital (including all indirect materials):

Material declaration data sheet (MDDS) in Western Digital format
Environmental Declaration of Conformity (EDoC) embedded in MDDS template
Homogeneous material level lab test reports (ICP) are required for all the homogenous materials declared in the MDDS template

We’re committed to delivering products designed and manufactured with environmental protection in mind. Because our products are used widely throughout the world, the improvements we make in energy efficiency, recyclability, responsible resource use and chemicals management have an important impact in preserving global natural resources and ecosystems. That is what our customers expect of us, and what we expect of ourselves.

Western Digital maintains an integrated corporate quality, environmental, health and safety policy. Our policy expresses a commitment to continued improvement, and to this end, we review the status of our environmental management systems at least annually. We are also committed to complying with all applicable environmental laws and regulations. In support of our environmental management system, Western Digital maintains environmental policies, procedures, and instructions that address a variety of environmental matters, including regulatory compliance, permitting, pollution prevention, hazardous substances, liquid waste, solid waste, and air emission controls. These policies and procedures are communicated to employees in various formats (including in-person training, web-based training, communications, postings, etc.) and are available in several languages.

We have qualified environmental professionals who monitor our manufacturing facilities and we provide training programs on environmental practices for employees whose job duties impact our environmental management systems. In addition, we communicate to employees the requirements and responsibilities for environmental practices in accordance with our Company policy.

Western Digital actively pursues industry-recognized certifications that provide globally accepted indicators reinforcing that our products and performance consistently meet high standards, including customer expectations and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements. In support of our management systems, Western Digital conducts both internal assessments and third-party audits to evaluate our compliance with applicable environmental laws, regulations and international standards.
